History Of Inveraray Jail

In 1820, a brand new Jail and Courthouse were constructed, replacing the notorious old prison that had gained a reputation for its frequent escapes. This newly built establishment stood tall and remained unchanged until 1843, when the Airing Yards were added. These yards provided a secure haven for prisoners to enjoy the fresh air and breathe freely. However, the real intrigue began in 1848 with the completion of the New Prison, also known as the Men's Prison. This architectural marvel of its time boasted twelve solitary cells, equipped with modern amenities, and even had indoor exercise areas. It was a symbol of progress, brightly lit and well-heated, in stark contrast to the grim and gloomy atmosphere of the original prison. Unfortunately, on August 30, 1889, the doors of the Jail were closed due to the exorbitant costs of maintenance. The once-thriving courthouse and prisons fell into a state of decay, but their historical significance was eventually recognized, leading to a meticulous restoration. In May 1989, exactly a century after the last prisoners departed, Inveraray Jail opened its gates to the public, breathing new life into this remarkable piece of Scotland's 19th-century history.
