Herefordshire Hall Ghost Night

Hereford Old Shire Hall Ghost Hunt

Haunt Nights  with Paranormal Eye UK

Spend the night on a ghost hunting experience at the haunted Shire Hall!

Built in the early 1800s and Grade II listed, the Shire Hall in Hereford has a gruesome and chilling past. Overnight Ghost Hunts here are certainly not for the faint-hearted.

Reputedly haunted and built on the site of the original Herefordshire prison - the Shire Hall consists of eerie courtrooms, dark and creepy cellars and the original scary prison cells. Can you face fears and become a real ghost hunter for the evening as we invite you to join this paranormal night?

As a former prison - grim public hangings took place directly outside the front entrance steps of the building, unfortunate for those who met their untimely death by the hangman’s noose - so it should come as no surprise that many spirits are thought to haunt this building! Many guests have refused to return to specific areas on previous ghost nights.

Much ghostly activity has been reported here, such as loud bangs and knocks – where upon further investigation, no living person was present. Also, guests said sounds of heavy footsteps walking down stairways. Be part of this ghost hunt if you dare?

Dark shadowed figures are also said to have been seen along with unpleasant odours that have been smelt in various parts of the building. Join the Paranormal Eye Team as we have full access to this haunted site, and we invite you to be part of this unique Paranormal Event.

The Hauntings

Many believe this site is haunted by two men, Alfred Watkins and George Armstrong, these two men were connected to the previous jail on this site, and in 1864, Alfred was hung outside the Shire Hall`s Steps. Alfred Watkins confessed to murdering his wife Mary, but he was convicted of murdering two men, which he never admitted. Many believe that Alfred has unfinished business, being sentenced to death for killing two men. This location is steeped in history, and the walls of this location hold many secrets, many of these being gruesome and harsh!

Dark Shadows of a man have been seen here, and loud cries and screams are heard coming from locked up empty cells. Are you ready to spend the night here?

Overnight Ghost Hunts can be a genuinely haunting ordeal.

Join the team at this haunted location for a unique ghost hunting experience.

History Of Hereford Shire Hall

The Shire hall was built in 1819 by Charles Heather under the instruction of Sir Robert Smirke on the site of a former Gaol. It features six Doric columns at the entrance. An Act of parliament in 1815 allowed for "erecting a Shire Hall, Courts of Justice and other Buildings, for Public Purposes. The Shire Hall, which opened in 181,7, still has its traditional courtroom, where prisoners were given the death penalty.

The Shire Hall has many original features – some believed to date to the previous building! The cells still retain an original heavy gate (often heard moving on its own accord) and components. The two courtrooms of the building have their original panelling, and several original features still can be found.

The Shire Hall is home to Hereford Crown Court. The building forms part of the "Civic Hub", and some council staff are based there. Meetings of Herefordshire Council and its committees take place in the Shire Hall Rooms in the Shire Hall may be hired by public members.

Watkins was in a stable marriage to a beautiful woman. However, his jealousy one day snapped his mind. Watkins made several threats to neighbours and friends, and on 18th January 1863, at10:00 pm, Mary Watkins was found lying in a pool of blood with a fractured skull; she was still alive but delirious. She was carried to the workhouse, where she passed away. On hearing of her death, Alfred confessed all; he couldn’t bear for her to live with anyone else, so he had killed her, he claimed. In 1864 Alfred was executed outside the Shire Hall’s steps but with some controversy. He went to the scaffold with a secret. Who had murdered the two men with Mary was allegedly having an affair – and why wouldn’t he accept responsibility? Even up to the final minutes of his life, he claimed he was innocent of their deaths. And then “walked firmly to the scaffold. He prayed fervently, shook hands with the officials, and died without a struggle. Having hung an hour, the body was cut down.”

In 1921 solicitor George Armstrong was arrested for the attempted murder of a professional rival by arsenic poisoning. He was later also charged and tried for the murder of his wife. Back in May 1919, his wife Kitty complained several times of damage to her nerves, and on 22 February 1921, Kitty passed away, which confused her doctor. However, the suspected poisoning of a local solicitor and his family raised suspicions about George’s purchases of large amounts of arsenic. The police arrested him, and he was held in Hereford Shire Hall for over six months while his case and subsequent appeals continued. George was sentenced to death and was hung at Gloucester Jail in May 1922. His alleged last words were, “Kitty, I’m Comin to ye!”
