The History Of Carew Castle

Gerald's original fortification was likely constructed from earth and wooden stakes. Later on, a stone castle was built to replace it. Much of what we see of Carew Castle today was the result of the efforts of Sir Nicholas de Carew who, until his death in 1311, was responsible for the construction of the east and west ranges.

In the late 15th century, Sir Rhys ap Thomas (1449-1525), a colorful character, greatly improved and extended the castle. He was responsible for numerous Bathstone windows and other features, and gained the trust of both Henry VII and Henry VIII to the extent that he was said to "rule this corner of Wales like a King."

The final development of Carew Castle transformed it from a medieval fortress into an Elizabethan manor. Sir John Perrot (1530-1592) built the Great Northern Range, which featured enormous windows with views of the Millpond. Unfortunately, he passed away before the work was completed and was never able to enjoy his magnificent new home.

During the Civil War, Sir George Carew owned the Castle and declared for the King. However, it was garrisoned by both royalists and parliamentarians at different times, and changed hands four times. Following a fierce assault, buildings on the south side, including the kitchens, were slighted to prevent the enemy from making further use of the site. After the Civil War, the Castle was occupied for some years, but was eventually abandoned in 1686.
In 1983, the National Park Authority leased the Castle and surrounding area for 99 years. They began an extensive restoration and management program with the aims of conserving the buildings, improving their setting, and increasing public access and enjoyment. The restoration program was long-term and involved a team of masons, and was grant-aided by Cadw: Welsh Historic Monuments.

The Castle is now a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) due to its bat population and several locally or regionally rare species of plants described on our Wildlife page.

In 2013, major renovation works were completed at Carew Castle, including the reinstatement of the Lesser Hall roof, a new visitor centre and shop, as well as car park enhancements.

The Nest Tearoom was added to the Walled Garden in 2018, and further redevelopment took place in this area in 2019. The scheme was funded by Cadw’s Heritage Tourism Project, which was funded by the European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Government. Funding was also invested by the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority.
