The History of Moira Furnace

A project was initiated in 1792 to build a canal near Ashby de la Zouch, but it never reached the town. In 1800, the local land was enclosed and Francis Rawdon Hastings, 2nd Earl Moira was granted the mineral rights. Four years later, he established the first coal mine and built a lime kiln on his land. A blast furnace was also constructed, providing an opportunity to use the local minerals, ironstone, limestone, and coal.

Unfortunately, the furnace was unsuccessful and only functioned for a few months. In 1811, it was closed after a catastrophic fire that melted the brickwork due to high temperatures. However, the associated iron foundry was successful and operated until the 1850s. The lime kilns were also profitable, producing quicklime for construction and agriculture until the 1850s. Coal mining in the area continued until the 1980s.

Moira briefly became a spa in 1812, as the saltwater from the mines was considered for commercial use. However, it was not well-received and the water was eventually transported to the Ivanhoe Baths in Ashby by canal and tramway.

Today, Moira Furnace is a preserved museum that is listed as a heritage site and located at the heart of a heritage park in the National Forest.
